The benefits of the hoverboard are numerous. Here are the main ones.
An ecological means of transport
The hoverboard is electric, it runs on battery, as for electric cars. This means that it does not pollute, and it will be enough to recharge it at home. We will see later in this article that the charging time is extremely short.

Easy to learn
As the hoverboard is equipped with a gyroscope that keeps the balance, it is extremely easy to use, whether you’re a kid or an adult (yes there is Electric hoverboard for adults). The grip is immediate thanks to this balancing system.
An economical device
The Electric hoverboard is more economical than a car or scooter because it does not need fuel to run. It recharges itself on the sector and allows to drastically reduce its transportation costs.
Adopting the technology of the Segway, including the Segway, the hoverboard is not designed for the same purpose. With its tiny wheels (6.5 inches in general, or 17 cm), it is unable to cross the smallest obstacle.

How Much Does A Hoverboard Cost
Sold initially at around 350 USD, the entry-level models now cost less than 200 USD, when the best performers do not reach 400 USD. Notably, all the sales sites that we consulted when updating the price schedule of this comparison apply a significant discount on the original sales price.
The main features
Here are the main features to look at when you want to buy a hoverboard.
Autonomy is the first important factor to study when you want to equip a hoverboard. On average, a hoverboard can hold 15 to 20 kilometers. But according to the devices, the autonomy can be variable because one finds models which have an autonomy of only 10 kilometers and others which have an autonomy of 30 kilometers.
If you are going to use your Electric Hoverboard to make a regular trip, check that it will have sufficient autonomy to make the round trip, or simply go if you can reload it at your place of work for example.
Note that the range may vary depending on the load of the person on it, and the speed at which you ride. If you are all the time, or if you have a weight slightly above average, it is better to take a margin of safety.
Each hoverboard has a maximum load not to exceed. For adult models, the maximum load is usually around 100 kilos. For some models, with smaller wheels for children, for example, the maximum load can be about 60 kilos. So be sure to check these criteria before you buy.
The cooldown is the time your hoverboard takes to fully charge its battery.
In general, the charging time for this type of product is 2 hours. This loading time is very short which will facilitate your daily life. This is particularly convenient because if you go to someone’s place, you can reload on site easily.
Maximum Electric Hoverboard speed
The maximum speed is a criterion to study if you want to be able to move quickly with your hoverboard. Speeds vary globally between 5 and 15 km / h.
Most devices have a speed of 12-15 km / h which corresponds to a very strong pace of jogging to give you an idea (except that we do not tire ;-)). There are however more suitable devices for children who will have a reduced maximum speed.
When you reach maximum speed, most hoverboards will show you through a bright display or a small sound.
Hoverboards are also often equipped with a speed limiter that activates when you descend a slope, for example, to avoid you take too much speed.
Power and speed
Unlike Electric Scooters, the Hoverboards are equipped with two motors, one for each wheel, with a power of 350 W, or 700 watts in total. This is sufficient to propel a maximum load, depending on the model, between 90 and 150 kg (Hoverboard Miro Weebot). The speed is voluntarily restrained between 12 and 15 km/hour maximum.
Some models are faster, reaching 20 km / h. But caution, at this speed, in case of loss of control, the risk of falling is very high, because it will be difficult to jump from the board and run during the few meters necessary to regain balance.
In addition, the machine being unable to overcome any obstacle, it is better to keep a reduced speed, so as to see early enough any defect in the coating.
Finally, remember that on a hoverboard, you are considered a pedestrian and must ride on sidewalks only, without exceeding 6 km / h, the higher speeds being reserved for tracks, skate parks, and private roads.
Weight of the device
It looks like nothing, but these machines, quite slender and slender weigh heavy. Count at least 10 kg (for example the Hoverboard Miro Weebot), up to 14 kg (Taagway Hammer), or a little more.
In the absence of handle, transport by hand is quickly difficult. And there is a little solution to overcome this problem, except to carry a carrying bag with you. It is, therefore, better to watch the autonomy carefully.
The size of the wheels
Like scooters, hoverboards incorporate wheels whose diameter varies according to the models. The majority of the machines are equipped with rubber tires 6.5 inches in diameter (about 17 cm).
This is the case for most Weebot, the Razor Hovertrax 2, but also the Beeper Road R4-UL or the Tilshop distributed by Decathlon.
On dry ground, and because of the very low ground clearance, the grip is satisfactory. On the other hand, the crossing of the least obstacle proves almost impossible. Models equipped with 8.5-inch wheels, less common, are a little less sensitive to small coating defects, but they are hardly more suitable for climbing.
Only the rare 10-inch models, such as The Hoverboard Rover, whose wheels are more inflatable, are able to cross, without stopping, steps of a few centimeters, like those of pedestrian crossings ( with practice!). But this machine is primarily designed for use on roads with degraded pavement, or even unpaved roads.
Equipment and accessories
The most interesting accessory is undoubtedly the mechanical trolley on which we put the electric board to turn the whole into karting. The price is reasonable, about 70 USD, and it makes the device accessible to all. The carrying bag, handbag or backpack is also valuable.
It is sometimes provided with the device (count about ten USD in option). Some hoverboards have Bluetooth speakers. Another gadget, the remote control to turn on the device remotely is provided with some models.
Hoverboards that explode!
The case caused a stir. In 2015, there were reports of the explosion or spontaneous combustion of some hoverboards. One of them even caused a fire that devastated a home. The reason is that the battery included in the low-end models, which proved to be not at all compliant with the safety standards in force.
Now all manufacturers are trying to incorporate CE-compliant batteries, typically provided by LG or Samsung. Since 2016, no new case of an explosion has been reported, but as a precaution, be aware that many airlines (Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Delta …) prohibit hoverboards in the cabin or in the hold.
And in case of breakdown?
In normal use, it is the hoverboard battery that, after a few hundred charging cycles, eventually let go. If it is almost always possible to replace it, the operation is justified only for the most expensive models, because a replacement battery to CE standards costs about 200 USD. Not sure that the expense is justified if we take into account the age of the device.
